Dany is one of the poor pupils living in Kampong Ampil village, Kampong Ampil commune, Romdoul district, Svay Rieng province. In 2024, she studied in grade 4 at Kampong Ampil Primary School. Every day, Dany walks about 3 kilometers with her friend to get to school. Occasionally, if another friend offers her a ride on their bicycle, she rides with them, but this doesn’t happen often. When walking, it takes her around 60 minutes to reach school.
Dany’s family is classified as Poor Group II, meaning they are among the very poor families in the village. They are farmers with a small house and only 0.30 hectares of farming land. Their income is about $23 per person per month. The family has four members:
- Keut Yang – Female, 33 years old, mother, stays at home to care for the children, raise chickens, and grow vegetables.
- Teth Kou – Male, 33 years old, father, works in home construction in Phnom Penh city.
- Voeurn Dany – Female, 11 years old, daughter
- Voeurn Seyha – Male, 5 years old, son
Although her father works far from home, his income is not enough to cover the family’s needs, especially with additional expenses like healthcare and education for the children.
Dany wakes up early every morning to help her mother by cleaning the house. She does not have enough school materials, and her school uniform is an old dress. She usually studies in the morning. Her breakfast is often leftover rice and food from the previous evening. She also brings a bottle of water from home each day.
Dany is not always able to arrive at school on time. Sometimes, she is absent due to family problems or transportation issues.
In Cambodia, regular public-school classes are not enough to help students pass their exams. Most students need to attend extra classes for at least two hours per day. However, very poor students like Dany face challenges in joining these classes because of the cost—$0.25 per hour.
Dany has requested support from our project to help her pay for extra classes and buy school supplies. She is asking for $12 per month to cover these needs.
