More Than a Bike Tour
Every year, travelers come to Vietnam to discover its bustling cities, famous landmarks, and breathtaking landscapes. Yet some of the country’s most meaningful experiences happen far from the tourist trails.
For more than a decade, Mekong Plus has been organizing cycling tours through the heart of the Mekong Delta. These tours offer visitors the opportunity to explore rural Vietnam at a slower pace while discovering the communities where Mekong Plus has been working for more than 30 years.

Far more than a simple cycling holiday, these journeys combine cultural discovery, human connection, and social impact.
Â
A Different Way to Experience Vietnam
The Mekong Delta is often described as Vietnam’s rice bowl. Crisscrossed by rivers, canals, orchards, and rice fields, it is home to millions of people whose lives remain closely connected to the land.
Travelling by bicycle allows visitors to experience this region in a way that would be impossible from a bus or a car. Participants ride along quiet village roads, cross small bridges, stop at local markets, and share meals with residents.

The pace is slower, but the experience is richer.
Instead of simply observing, visitors become immersed in daily life. They see children cycling to school, farmers working in their fields, and families building better futures through their own efforts and determination.
Â
Riding on Bamboo Bikes with a Purpose
One of the unique features of many Mekong Plus bike tours is that participants ride bamboo bicycles produced by Mekong Quilts, one of Mekong Plus’ social enterprises.
More than just a means of transportation, these bicycles reflect the organization’s commitment to social entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Through Mekong Quilts, local artisans receive training, employment opportunities, and a stable source of income while creating high-quality handcrafted products.

For visitors, cycling through the Vietnamese countryside on a bamboo bike becomes another way of connecting with the values that drive Mekong Plus: innovation, sustainability, and community empowerment.
Â
Meeting the Communities Behind the Projects
One of the most unique aspects of the Mekong Plus bike tours is the opportunity to meet the people behind the projects.
Participants visit villages where Mekong Plus supports scholarships, microcredit programs, infrastructure projects, and community development initiatives.

Depending on the itinerary, participants may visit schools supported by scholarship programs, discover household biogas systems that improve sanitation and reduce energy costs, meet families developing small livestock activities such as chicken or pig farming, or visit Mekong Quilts workshops where local women transform traditional skills into sustainable livelihoods.
These visits provide a practical understanding of how development projects work on the ground and how relatively small investments can create lasting change for entire families and communities.
Â
Tours for Every Schedule
Mekong Plus offers several ways to experience Vietnam by bike.
Some participants join the flagship tours, lasting ten days or more, which combine cycling, project visits, and cultural discovery across multiple regions of Vietnam.

Others choose shorter experiences, such as weekend tours in the Mekong Delta or half-day rides around Ho Chi Minh City. While shorter in duration, these tours offer the same opportunity to discover local communities, meet project beneficiaries, and better understand the work of Mekong Plus.
Whether visitors have a few hours, a weekend, or several weeks, there is a tour designed to provide an authentic and meaningful experience.
Â
More Than a Route: A Journey of Discovery and Solidarity
Mekong Bikes is far more than a cycling holiday. It is an invitation to discover Vietnam and Cambodia through the eyes of the communities who live there.
As participants ride along peaceful backroads, they travel through villages rarely visited by tourists and experience daily life at a slower pace. The encounters are often spontaneous: a conversation with a farmer, a visit to a local school, a shared meal with a family, or a glimpse into the realities and aspirations of rural communities.

Depending on the chosen itinerary, participants may spend up to eight half-days visiting Mekong Plus projects in Vietnam and Cambodia. Along the way, they discover schools, microcredit initiatives, biogas systems, bamboo bicycle workshops, and many other community-led solutions that help families improve their living conditions.
The tours can also include some of the region’s most remarkable cultural and historical sites, such as Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh, Sambo Prey Kuk, Ho Chi Minh City, Củ Chi, Cần ThÆ¡, and many others. Every visit is accompanied by knowledgeable local guides who help bring the places and communities to life.
Â
A Tour Designed Around Your Interests
No two Mekong Bikes journeys are exactly alike.
Some participants prefer a more active adventure, cycling through the coastal landscapes of Bình Thuáºn and Ninh Thuáºn provinces. Others choose a more relaxed experience in the Mekong Delta or on peaceful islands such as Hòn SÆ¡n. For those interested in history and culture, itineraries can extend into Cambodia, including visits to the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat.
Â

Â
With mostly flat terrain, around four hours of cycling per day, and electric bike options available, the tours are accessible to a wide range of participants. Whether you are seeking adventure, cultural discovery, or meaningful encounters, Mekong Plus can help create a journey tailored to your interests.
Â
Travel That Creates Impact
Every participation in a Mekong Plus bike tour directly contributes to the organization’s work in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Unlike traditional tourism, these tours are part of Mekong Plus’ social enterprise model. The revenue generated helps fund development programs while also creating economic opportunities for local communities through accommodation, restaurants, guides, transportation providers, and local suppliers.
Every participant helps fund scholarships, microcredit programs, infrastructure projects, and other community initiatives while also supporting local businesses along the route.
It is a model built on the belief that travel can be a force for positive change.
Often visitors worry about the environmental impact of their flight to Vietnam: to compensate for this Mekong Plus commits to use at least 100€ per visitor for environmental programs. For example one visitor can support one more biogas system, thus saving one tree/month… forever!

Turning Kilometres into Opportunities
Every kilometre ridden and every euro raised helps create opportunities for families across the Mekong region.
Through Mekong Plus, these funds support scholarships for vulnerable children, microcredit programs that help families build sustainable incomes, the construction of rural roads and bridges, and university scholarships for young people determined to continue their education.
But the needs remain immense. Millions of people in Vietnam and Cambodia still live in poverty, and many children remain at risk of leaving school because their families cannot afford the costs.
By joining a bike tour, making a donation, or supporting a fundraising initiative, you can help provide practical, long-term solutions for some of the region’s most vulnerable communities.
Together, we can turn a journey through the Mekong into lasting opportunities for those who need them most.
Â
Join the Adventure
As Mekong Plus continues its mission of supporting vulnerable communities throughout the Mekong region, the bike tours remain an important bridge between visitors and the people whose lives are being transformed.
For those looking to discover Vietnam differently, the answer may be found on two wheels, along a small village road, where every kilometre traveled helps create opportunities for someone else.
Because sometimes the most meaningful journeys are the ones that leave a positive impact long after the trip is over.
