LE AN XUYEN – HOLDING ON TO A DREAM AMID HARDSHIP
Born in Hamlet 1, Vinh Vien Commune, Can Tho City, Le An Xuyen grew up in a family with no farmland, no stable livelihood—only hard-working hands and a quiet belief that education is the only path to change a life.
Xuyen’s family has five members. His father, a daily hired labourer, earns about 250,000 VND (≈ USD 10) per day when his health allows. Recently, after undergoing eye surgery for cataracts, his ability to work has become increasingly unstable. His mother has been diagnosed with malignant thyroid cancer and must travel monthly to Ho Chi Minh City for treatment. On days when her health permits, she weaves water hyacinth handicrafts, earning 50,000–80,000 VND per day (≈ USD 2–3) to help cover daily expenses and medical costs.
This modest income must support the entire household—daily living, medical treatment, and the education of their children. On average, the family survives on just 708,000 VND per person per month (≈ USD 28).
Yet poverty has not taken away Xuyen’s determination.
Throughout 12 years of schooling, Xuyen consistently achieved the title of excellent student. Alongside his studies, he developed a strong passion for sports and won multiple silver and gold medals in Karate competitions. For Xuyen, martial arts are not only about physical strength, but about discipline, perseverance, and never giving up—especially when life is harder than for others.
In 2025, Xuyen proudly became a first-year student in Physical Education at Can Tho University. The joy of entering university, however, was quickly followed by the burden of tuition fees. Each payment period forces the family to borrow from relatives or take loans from the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies, sometimes amounting to 40,000,000 VND (≈ USD 1,600).
Determined not to place further strain on his parents, Xuyen works part-time at a clothing shop, earning 80,000–100,000 VND per day (≈ USD 3–4). These small daily wages come together to form a fragile but persistent hope—allowing him to remain in school.
Xuyen understands that to build a stable future after graduation, he needs more than just professional training. He hopes to study English and Information Technology to improve his skills and employment prospects. Unfortunately, due to his family’s financial hardship, these plans remain out of reach.
What Xuyen carries closest to his heart is a simple and deeply human wish:
“One day, I want a stable job so I can take care of my parents, support my mother’s treatment, and ensure my family no longer lives in constant hardship.”
To keep that dream alive, Xuyen’s family has applied for a student loan of 10,000,000 VND per academic year (≈ USD 400/year) from Anh Duong Center—not as a handout, but as a chance for him to continue walking forward on his own strength.
Every contribution today helps a young student avoid having to abandon his education midway.
Every act of support becomes a small brick in building a future where Xuyen can stand on his own, repay what he has received, and one day give back to his community.
