Chantrea is a 14-year-old student in grade 8 at Samroung High School, Romdoul district, Svay Rieng province. She is a bright, hardworking girl who dreams of continuing her education, but her family has faced very difficult times.
In February 2025, tragedy struck when her father passed away after a violent family incident. Her mother, Sreymom, who works in a garment factory, was badly injured and had to be hospitalized in Phnom Penh for several months. Thankfully, she survived, but the family’s struggles only deepened.
Not long after, their small wooden house was destroyed by a fire. With nowhere to live, Chantrea’s family received emergency support from the local community, her school, and the Community Advancement Organization (CAO), with generous help from donors like Mr. Philippe Heymans. Together, they built a modest new home so the family could start again.
Today, Chantrea, her younger sister, and her little brother live with their mother in this small house. The family survives on her mother’s low factory salary and a little from raising chickens—less than $16 per person per month. It is barely enough for food, let alone school needs.
