Tran Nhat Hien’s family has faced immense hardship. Her father suffered a stroke four years ago and is now wheelchair-bound, using an old electric wheelchair kindly donated by a neighbor. Her mother passed away just eight months ago after being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.
Once a construction worker supporting the whole family, Hien’s father can no longer do heavy labor and now sells lottery tickets, earning only about €2.50 per day to feed himself and his three children. Hien’s younger sister are in grades 6 and the youngest brother is in grade 3. Besides school time, she takes care of all the housework and cooking.
