Sreymey

Sreymey is a 14-year-old student living in Veal village, Meun Chey commune, Romdoul district, Svay Rieng province. In 2025, she is studying in grade 7B at Meun Chey Secondary School, one of the target schools in the district. Despite her difficult situation, she is a hardworking and committed student.

Sreymey travels about 3 kilometers to school each day, spending around 25 minutes by bicycle. Her family is among the poorest in the village. They have a small house, no farmland for growing rice, and rely on limited income sources. Her parents separated a long time ago. Her mother works in a garment factory in Phnom Penh, while her grandmother stays home to take care of Sreymey and raise chickens and ducks.

The family consists of four members:

1. Mom Sarun (female, 68 years old) – Grandmother
2. Chab Savin (female, 39 years old) – Mother
3. Poun Sreyka (female, 18 years old) – Sister
4. Poun Sreymey (female, 14 years old) – Student, Grade 7B

Their total family income, mostly from factory work and small-scale poultry raising, is only about $18 per person per month, which is not enough to meet the family’s needs—especially with the costs of supporting their daughters’ education.

Each morning, Sreymey wakes up early to help with household chores. She usually eats leftover rice and food from the previous evening before going to school. She studies hard on her own because her family cannot afford to pay for private tutoring or extra classes. Although the family is poor, she never misses a day of school. She dreams of joining extra classes to improve her knowledge and skills but lacks the financial means to do so.

Her family is requesting a monthly scholarship of $20 to support her education and help her continue her studies with more confidence and opportunities.
