Sok Rina, a 14-year-old in Svay Rieng province, Cambodia, faces the challenges of education in 2023. Despite being in the very poor ‘Group I’ category, Rina excels in the eighth grade at Samroung High School, commuting 6km daily by bike.
Her family, reliant on a small rice field and her mother’s factory job in Bavit city, struggles with a monthly income of $21 per person. Rina’s father left five years ago, leaving additional financial strains.
Despite these hardships, Rina’s dedication to education is unwavering. Every morning, she helps her mother with chores, fueled by a simple breakfast. Lacking resources for private tutoring, Rina perseveres in self-study, embodying resilience in the face of adversity. Her story illuminates the daily struggles of a determined young girl from an economically disadvantaged background committed to her education.
