As the school year approaches, many children in Vietnam and Cambodia eagerly anticipate the new academic challenges that lie ahead. However, for countless others, financial constraints threaten to cut short their educational journeys. This is where Mekong Plus steps in, striving to ensure that every child, regardless of their economic background, has the opportunity to pursue their education and achieve their dreams. One of the most impactful ways Mekong Plus raises funds for scholarships and educational programs is through its annual Solidarity Runs.
The Birth of the Solidarity Run
The Solidarity Run was born out of a pressing need identified by the very communities Mekong Plus serves. Back in 2001, village residents highlighted access to education as their top priority. Recognizing that achieving this goal would require a collective effort, Mekong Plus introduced the concept of a community-wide run or walk. The condition was clear: for a commune to receive priority in scholarship allocation, at least 1,000 participants needed to join the event. Over the years, this initiative has grown exponentially, mobilising thousands of people across Vietnam and Cambodia.
The annual solidarity run has been held since 2001 where at least 125,000 individuals from all beneficiary communes join a short 2-kilometre run every year before contributing any sum of money they deem fit to the programme. From students, teachers, and parents, to even local officials and policemen, the solidarity run sees locals from all walks of life running for a single shared vision.

A Record of Generosity and Participation
The Solidarity Runs have become a staple event in the communities where Mekong Plus operates. The number of participants and the amount of donations collected from village residents has steadily increased over the years, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting education.

In 2018, the Solidarity Run drew 112,154 participants who raised over 30,000 €. By 2022, the event had expanded significantly, with 193,526 participants contributing nearly 52,000 €. The momentum continued into 2023, with 143,513 people raising an impressive 56,000 €. These funds, generated on-site, directly support education initiatives and provide scholarships for other disadvantaged children in need. This steady growth in participation and generosity underscores the community’s unwavering commitment to uplifting underprivileged children and ensuring they have access to education.
Adapting to Local Needs
Mekong Plus recognizes that not all regions can safely host a large-scale run. In areas where dangerous roads pose a risk to participants, the event is adapted into other community-building activities, such as tree planting or plastic waste collection. These alternatives not only ensure the safety of participants but also contribute to the environmental well-being of the community.

Beyond the funds raised by villagers, Mekong Plus and other donors add to the total, amplifying the impact of each Solidarity Run. As a result, approximately 2-3% of children in these communities receive scholarships. Impressively, 100% of scholarship recipients maintain perfect attendance at school, underscoring the program’s effectiveness in keeping children in the classroom.
The Power of Scholarships
Mekong Plus’s scholarship programs are a crucial element of its mission to reduce school dropouts. While many scholarship initiatives focus on supporting the brightest students, Mekong Plus aims to ensure that all children, regardless of their academic standing, have the opportunity to complete their education. The annual scholarships amount to 700,000 VND per child for primary and secondary school students, with high school students receiving 1 million VND. Although these amounts cover less than 10% of the actual costs of education, they provide essential support for families struggling to make ends meet.

The long-term impact of these scholarships is clear. Studies have shown that former scholarship recipients are more likely to continue their education beyond primary school than their peers, with 71% of female recipients advancing to the next educational level, compared to the national average of 58%.
Extending Support Beyond School
Mekong Plus’s commitment to education extends beyond the primary and secondary levels. In response to the shortage of government loans for post-secondary students, the organization has launched an experimental microcredit program. This initiative provides loans of up to 30 million VND for students pursuing higher education, with repayments beginning after graduation and at reduced interest rates. This program aims to bridge the financial gap for students who might otherwise be unable to continue their studies.

In addition to scholarships and microcredits, Mekong Plus teams work to match students with sponsors who can provide additional support. These sponsors often contribute amounts higher than the standard scholarship, further easing the financial burden on families.
