A Meaningful Voyage: Highlights from Our 2025 Solidarity Cruise

The Mekong Delta is a place where vibrant traditions, rich landscapes, and resilient communities converge—and the Mekong Plus Solidarity Cruise offers a unique opportunity to experience all of it from the deck of the charming RV Toum Tiou II. But unlike a typical river cruise, this journey goes beyond sightseeing. It’s about connecting with people, learning from communities, and directly supporting local development initiatives through Mekong Plus.

On our latest journey in February 2025, guests didn’t just explore—they engaged. From floating markets and peaceful bike rides through the countryside to witnessing the impact of microfinance and vocational training programs, this was a cruise rooted in meaning. It was a journey that opened minds, warmed hearts, and left lasting impressions.

The Spirit of the Mekong, Onboard and Ashore

Sailing down the Mekong River, our guests from Belgium and France embarked in Ho Chi Minh City and were welcomed into a world far from the well-trodden tourist path. The RV Toum Tiou II, with its classic wooden design and warm crew, quickly became home. As we passed riverside villages, lush fields, and bustling markets, the boat itself became a floating lens into the life of the Delta.

One of the standout stops was the vibrant town of Châu Đốc, near the Cambodian border. Here, travelers explored floating fishing farms—an essential part of the local economy. The rhythm of life on the water, with fish pens bobbing alongside homes, offered insight into the ingenuity of riverside communities.

From Classrooms to Kitchens: Real Encounters with Impact

One of the most rewarding aspects of the journey was witnessing how Mekong Plus’ programs are changing lives. In Long Mỹ, our enthusiastic group visited a local school supported by our organization. Children, curious and excited, greeted us with wide smiles and practiced their English. For most people, this was a powerful moment—seeing that donations and support translate directly into better education for future generations.

From the group visited homes where Mekong Plus’ microfinance programs have empowered families. Modest yet transformative loans allowed individuals and especially women and single moms to start small businesses, make home improvements, or access healthcare. Conversations were simple but profound, offering a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of rural life.

One traveler later wrote, “Putting our noses into humanitarian work like this is absolutely irreplaceable. It’s obvious the team works incredibly hard, but I hope the return for the organization is worth it.”

Celebrating Handcrafted Heritage in Long Mỹ

In Long Mỹ, the focus shifted to craftsmanship and empowerment. At the quilting workshop run by Mekong Quilts—a social enterprise launched by Mekong Plus—women artisans demonstrated how their work not only preserves tradition but provides sustainable income for many families.

Guests admired and purchased beautifully handcrafted quilts and bags, knowing their money would go directly back to the makers. A particularly memorable moment was the interactive weaving session, where visitors tried their hand at traditional techniques under the guidance of local artisans.

This wasn’t a tourist performance—it was a genuine exchange between people, rooted in mutual respect and admiration.

Cultural Touchstones

Lunch was enjoyed at a family-run restaurant, where guests gathered around low tables to enjoy fresh Mekong cuisine. One guest recalled, “The restaurant choices were perfect throughout the trip. The day we had Bánh Xèo in Saigon—probably my favorite. It reminded me of the chaotic joy I love in Vietnam—tiny plastic stools, scooters whizzing by, and laughter everywhere.”

A Sweet Farewell in Cân Thơ

One of the final highlights was a visit to the floating market in Cân Thơ where guests witnessed the traditional trade of goods from boat to boat. It was a lively and authentic look at commerce in the Mekong Delta. A stop at a family-owned coconut candy workshop brought the journey full circle. Watching the sticky candy take shape in giant pans—and sampling it warm and fresh—was a delightful conclusion to a rich cultural journey.

That evening, back on board, everyone gathered for a farewell dinner on deck. The sunset turned the river gold as stories were shared and friendships solidified. What started as a group of strangers had become a close-knit community, united by a common purpose.

More Than a Cruise: A Social Impact Journey

The Mekong Plus Solidarity Cruise is not just a vacation—it’s an invitation to travel differently. Every stop is an opportunity to understand how sustainable tourism can support long-term development. Whether riding an eco-friendly bamboo bicycle through rice paddies, speaking with artisans, or visiting a rural school, the focus remains on community-led change.

And the ripple effect is real. As one participant wrote after the journey, “Even though I had already explored much of Vietnam, I didn’t know the Mekong Delta. Discovering it this way—by going into people’s homes—was an experience I won’t soon forget.”

Another guest mentioned how impressed they were with the thoughtful logistics and care: “The length of the bike rides was just right, the restaurants were well chosen, and the hotel at the end of the trip in Siem Reap was a real highlight.
