In the landscape of community development across Vietnam and Cambodia, Mekong Plus and its local partners the Anh Duong Center, the Thien Chi Center and C.AO (Community Advancement Organization) are recognized as a catalyst for progress and hope. As we review our achievements in 2023 and outline our plans for 2024, our commitment to sustainable change remains unwavering. This blog delves into the impactful initiatives we’ve undertaken over the past year and charts our strategic vision for the future.
Acknowledgment of Supporters
The journey of Mekong Plus would not have been possible without the generous support of donors, businesses, and foundations. This unwavering commitment has been great in enabling Mekong Plus to sustain critical programs amid economic challenges and external uncertainties. With continued support from big Vietnamese corporations such as Vinamilk – Vui Khỏe Mỗi Ngày and Ví MoMo the Anh Duong Center and the Thien Chi Center are gaining more and more support from corporations locally but also from global corporate partners such as BNL BNP Paribas and ScanCom International, which are helping us uplift the most vulnerable communities in south Vietnam and Cambodia.
A great example of the incredible support we have received is the partnership established between the Thien Chi Center and MoMo, a popular online payment platform in Vietnam. Through their support and the support of their Vietnamese users, MoMo has helped collect valuable funds reaching over €40,000 yearly thanks to massive public participation!
Expansive Community Initiatives
Throughout 2023, Mekong Plus continued to implement a diverse array of initiatives aimed at addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by communities surviving on less than €30 per person per month. These initiatives spanned agriculture, education, microcredit, environmental sustainability, and healthcare, all contributing significantly to improving livelihoods and fostering resilience.
Education as a Catalyst for Change
Education remains central to Mekong Plus’s mission, recognized as a potent tool for breaking the cycle of poverty. In 2023, the organisation expanded efforts to enhance educational access, particularly focusing on marginalised groups such as young girls. Scholarships, vocational training, and support for technical education initiatives played a crucial role in equipping youth with the skills necessary for sustainable livelihoods.

For instance, in rural Cambodia, Mekong Plus partnered with local schools to improve infrastructure and access to quality education. By improving the schools and providing learning materials, we increased school attendance rates by 30% among girls from marginalised communities. Over 500 scholarships were awarded, enabling students to pursue secondary and tertiary education, with a remarkable 95% retention rate.
Microcredit and Economic Resilience
Amid economic volatility exacerbated by factors like climate change, Mekong Plus’s microcredit programs continued to provide crucial financial support to rural households. By offering affordable loans coupled with training in sustainable agricultural practices, the organisation empowered communities to diversify income sources and build resilience against external shocks. The high repayment rate of 99% underscores the effectiveness and sustainability of these initiatives.

In Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, Mekong Plus supported over 200 micro-enterprises led by women, providing them with access to microloans averaging €200. This support enabled villagers to expand their small businesses such as rice farming, fish breeding, and handicraft production, leading to a 20% increase in household income within the first year of implementation.
Infrastructure Development for Community Empowerment
Investments in infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and sanitation facilities have significantly improved accessibility to essential services in rural areas. These developments not only enhance daily life for residents but also bolster community resilience, enabling them to withstand and recover from challenges more effectively.

In collaboration with local governments and international donors, Mekong Plus constructed 15 kilometres of roads and 10 bridges in remote Cambodian villages, reducing travel time to markets and health centres by 50%. Additionally, the installation of 100 sanitation facilities improved hygiene and reduced waterborne diseases, benefiting over 5,000 households.
Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability
Aligned with global efforts to combat climate change, Mekong Plus intensified its environmental sustainability initiatives in 2023. Projects focused on plastic recycling, sustainable agriculture, and tree planting initiatives have not only reduced environmental degradation but also promoted eco-friendly practices among local populations. These efforts are crucial in safeguarding natural resources for future generations.

In response to increasing plastic waste pollution in Vietnam, Mekong Plus launched a recycling program that collected and processed over 5 metric tons of plastic waste. The initiative involved training community members in waste management and providing them with equipment to convert plastic into reusable materials, creating additional income opportunities for participants.
Achievements and Impact
In 2023, we achieved significant milestones in poverty alleviation and community development. Over 1,100 families were lifted out of poverty, underscoring the transformative impact of their programs. Beyond economic outcomes, these initiatives have fostered social cohesion, empowered women and marginalised groups, and enhanced community resilience.
Across both Vietnam and Cambodia, Mekong Plus’s healthcare initiatives reached over 50,000 individuals through health education campaigns. As a result, child malnutrition rates decreased by 15% in targeted communities, demonstrating the direct impact of improved access to healthcare services and nutritional education.
Perspectives for 2024: Insights from the Mekong Plus Team
As we have well entered into 2024, we have set clear expectations and goals that will guide our efforts in continuing our mission of poverty alleviation and community empowerment in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Expectations and Goals
In 2024, we aim to persist in our core mission of eliminating poverty. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated economic hardships, pushing thousands into acute poverty. Our primary goals for the year include strengthening our partnerships to enhance sustainability and increasing our fundraising efforts, both internationally and locally.

Challenges and Solutions
We anticipate significant challenges, particularly in fundraising and capacity building for our local teams. To address these, we are leveraging the support of our boards to identify new funders and partners. Additionally, we are exploring the potential of generating funds through social enterprises. Capacity building is essential, as it will equip our local teams with the skills needed to achieve our ambitious goals.
Community Engagement
Engaging and collaborating with local communities remains at the heart of our approach. With a solid foundation of experience, Mekong Plus will continue to seek innovative, low-cost solutions for development. A key aspect of our strategy involves mobilising community support for emergency cases, which currently accounts for up to 30% of the costs. This level of community involvement is crucial for the success and sustainability of our projects.
Support and Collaboration
The role of donors and partners is vital in achieving our goals for 2024. Mekong Plus and our local partners recognize the need to become more self-sufficient, and new partnerships or collaborations will help sustain our current activities while facilitating gradual change. We have observed increased support from other NGOs, such as Saigon Children Charity, which is a positive indicator of the collaborative efforts within the development sector.

Innovation and Sustainability
To ensure long-term sustainability, Mekong Plus plans to adopt several innovative approaches in 2024. These include empowering local communities to take ownership of projects, promoting agroecological practices that enhance productivity while preserving the environment, such as crop rotation, organic farming, and integrated pest management.

We are also building partnerships with government agencies, private sector companies, and other NGOs to leverage resources and expertise. Additionally, we are exploring the development of social enterprises and eco-tourism as potential revenue streams.
Personal Reflections
Our motivation to lead Mekong Plus stems from the profound impact we see in the communities we serve. Building strong relationships with community members and witnessing their growth and empowerment is incredibly rewarding. The trust and collaboration we have developed over time are invaluable. Working with a passionate and dedicated team, as well as partners and donors who share our vision, is both energising and inspiring.
Reflecting on our achievements in 2023, we have expanded our activities to many new areas, addressing the needs of poorer communities. This expansion has been a significant source of motivation, and we are committed to continuing this momentum into 2024. Our ongoing journey of making a positive impact, overcoming challenges, and celebrating successes, both big and small, drives our dedication to fostering sustainable development and improving lives in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Conclusion
As we have embarked on another year of transformative community development, our commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in Vietnam and Cambodia remains unwavering. Through our holistic approach to education, economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure development, Mekong Plus continues to exemplify the principles of participatory development and community-driven change.
